Bigger moons are always better! Obtain them and keep them. If you want to invest money into a moon, don't bother if it is under 8k. Anything over 9k should keep you safe from moderate threats.
The size of a moon is figured into the equation that determines the chance of that moon being destroyed by RIPs. The bigger the moon, the less of a chance the RIPs would have of successfully popping it. To compensate, people add more RIPs to the destroy mission, which will give them a better chance of destruction. So the whole point is to have a big enough moon to deter people from popping it.
The important thing to note is that the amount of RIPs you need to pop a moon is exponential as the moon size increases. For example:
To pop a 8k moon with a 100% of success, you need about 90 RIPs.
Where as to pop a 9k moon with a 100% of success, you would need 380 RIPs.
Here are some more numbers calculated if the RIP's had a 100% chance:
7,500k - 56 RIPs
8,500k - 164 RIPs
9,500k - 1,560 RIPs
9,700k - 4,378 RIPs
9,999k - 399,980,000 RIPs
As you can see, the number of RIPs required to 100% a moon get ridiculously high.
Why did I go to 9999k? Because that is the biggest moon you can have that is not 10k, which is a perfect moon. The funny thing with the equation is that if you plug 10,000 in, you will end up dividing by 0. Because dividing by 0 is impossible, you can't calculate a chance of that moons destruction. Therefore, a 10,000k moon is impossible to destroy. I've only heard of such a moon and getting one one would make you a very lucky person.
As far as moon size you can't guarantee a certain diameter. It's a dice roll to get one, and a dice roll to determine how large it is. If you get a small one, abandon it and shoot for a larger one.
