Avatar’s Angle – GLotR: Semantics, Reflection, and Common Sense

GLotR(Good Luck on the Rebuild). I have referenced this term only once in the past, never have or will use, and this will most likely be the last.

Good Luck! - What It Means, What it Is.

Me: Hey, I’m going to send my fleet of 1,000 Light Fighters over to the Administrator’s colony and ruin his day!

Friend: Yeah... Good luck on that little endeavour my friend, because that will never happen!

Good luck as far as I can define from my knowledge is simply an Interjection. A word added to a sentence to inject or convey emotion, but really not required at all to be related to the sentence grammatically. As you can see, in the example above my friend injected his emotion into his response to suit my situation. He obviously thinks that I have no chance in succeeding in my attack on the Administrator’s colony, and points this with a dash of sarcasm by adding good luck into the sentence.

Me: Cool, I just researched Graviton Technology, I’m going to build a fleet of Death Stars!

Friend: Good luck!

Perhaps this is the most common exploitation of the Interjection. When one has nothing else to say to another’s pointless declaration of a task, which doesn’t actually require any skill or even remotely require luck! He might as well have said “Good luck in building, I hope your workers don’t strike because you aren’t paying them enough!” Since you don’t have to micromanage production resources or worker populations in ZE, building things is not a challenge what so ever. Likewise, waiting for the resources to be produced or raiding them from inactives, no problems there! So why do we need luck to perform that simple function? We don’t.

The Centre Of Everything - Me, Myself, I.

I believe this quote from Walt Whitman will correctly illustrate exactly what is going on here 90% of the time. “The whole theory of the universe is directed unerringly to one single individual - namely to You.” When GLotR is used it is not the one who has been on the receiving end, on the contrary this Mantra is spoken allowed by you, the person who initiated hostility. Then it is echoed by a gallery of voyeurs and onlookers. We must look inward and accept the fact that we as a society thrive off others misfortune, even if to just take our minds off our own personal defeats. BP has, is, and will continue for some time to destroy the Gulf of Mexico. We watch, we comment, we complain about the corporation and the government, but how many of us are jumping on planes to actually go help the people affected by the crisis? Are you sending aid in form of resources to your victims so that they can rebuild? No, you are not. You are saying it, because you approve of your nice big hit, and you feel like your victim will need a lot of luck to recover from your massive and possibly game ending trashing.

Rocket Surgury – How Do I Rebuild?

Let us examine the process for rebuilding in at least two ways, mining & moving, and I will include in them where luck is actually needed hence the reason for using the phrase. Firstly we have Mining, wait a little bit, then click the build button. Wait a little bit more, click the build button. Wait even more, then a lot more after, click the build button. Secondly we have Moving, go to one of your colonies and send a fleet of Large Cargo ships over, full of resources, to your colony that has just been attacked or to your main ship staging area. Find some ships, click build. Rebuilding has been completed, but wait a minute you say! You were going to show us how we can use this good fortune of luck to rebuild faster! I did show you in a way, you see you don’t actually need luck to rebuild because it isn’t risky or challenging nor is it packaged inside the game as a variable. Here in Zorg Empire there is no risky impossible “rebuild” task waiting for you to try and build something again. No feat you have to overcome that is so great, so insurmountable that you need the good wishes and luck from life, let alone someone hostile to you, or you couldn’t possibly ever achieve it again.

Conclusion

I am a pretty black and white person so therefore I see and think quickly after that fashion, I mean I am a male after all. I can make the easy distinction here and can draw a straight line from A(Good Luck on the Rebuild) to B(bwaahahaha I just FUBAR your fleet everyone look at me look at me!). It is morally dubious, grammatically unsound, and on topic of rebuilding; inaccurate. Why don’t we come up with something which is exactly the opposite of all of those then? Because we are all big ****s, and we love it that is why :P

Disclaimer - This is in no way a dig at the game, or any one person in particular! I know at least some of you are actually honourable and do wish to convey your respect and compassion by using GLotR, I just think we can do better!

The spirit of the times may alter, will alter. We must crush in its birth the aristocracy of our moneyed crporations, which dare already to bid defiance to the laws of our country.
