Each engine does a different thing:

Combustion Engine: It boosts the speed of large and small cargoes, recyclers, espionage probes, and light fighters by 10% of the base value.

Impulse Engine: It boosts the speed of cruisers, heavy fighters, bombers, colony ships, and possibly elite cargoes? by 20% of the base value.

Hyperspace Engine: It boosts the speed of Battleships, Battlecruisers, Deathstars, and Destroyers by 30% of the base value.

All upgrades make the ship faster, but make it use more duet. IF you drop the speed to the level it was though, less deut is used there.

The affected ships travel faster and consume more deut at top speed but if slowed to the previous top speed they will use less deut than before the upgrade. Also you get research points
