With very few exceptions, if you have been attacked, it is because it was worth the expense of fuel and the tying up of a fleet slot for the time involved in order to attack you. No one made it to where they are by pounding planets for no profit. The forum is full of advice on how to fleetsave, but it is also important to spend your resources. A turtle shell one system over is easier to hit profitably than a relatively smaller one 50 systems away because I can send more ships to hit the close one for no loss with less fuel spent then would be required for a smaller turtle further away. Do not rely on your shell to protect your resources if you have more than a couple million total resources and less than 30k LL or equivalent.
The fact that numerous members of your alliance were hit means that numerous members of your alliance are not playing the game optimally. No one wastes the time and fuel to pick on little guys.
That is of course great advice, thank you Shaftoe. And you are correct, whatever I do have I do spend, Zorg Res certainly don't collect interest from the banks. Only interest with others trying to get them

I fleet save the Res I need for my next big project, like say a Nano lvl5 or research lvl 14. Is that also an incorrect thing to do?
