It work just like the way normal attacks work, just the ACS fleets are joined together to make bigger fleet. The duration for the fleet to stick together is set by each joining player at the launch pad. Say three players are joining force one ACSs for one hour the ohter sets it for two. Then the first fleet will leave ACS after one hour and the second will leave after two, if any of it is left behind ;) The attack time is set to a common time line say gmt, each attacker will set their fleet to arrive at the planet at the right time by adjusting their fleet speed or launch time. It is not that complected. Just add the travel duration as a offset to the current time result the attack time.
But that would require precision to within a second for each player, if I'm understanding this correctly. And what would happen to the fleets when they are sitting at the planet? Attacks last nanoseconds in this game, so the fleets would be useless for an hour or two or whatever you set it to. If this were a real life strategy, your concept of 3 different fleets arriving at the same target would work really well. However, with the game mechanics and limitations, it is not possible to implement this in the way you describe it.

ACS Attacks are intended to catch the returning fleets not attack the orbiting fleet, I believe that's the main purpose here. And yah, to attack an orbiting fleet you need to synchronize of course.
And for defense you actually stand guard for the attack waves, again hours are too big of intervals for this kind of operations.

Experts your two cents will be appreciated here. I am just shooting with my own understanding. I may be wrong. So please certify.

Hmmm i think we're viewing the same problem, however interpreting it completely differently. Some stronger players want to add something to this? Or Zorg? It would be nice to see how this will work.

I believe it works like this:

1st attacker sends a fleet to a target planet. Let's say the duration is 10 mins.
2nd attacker will send a fleet to the target planet. Duration is 5 mins.

The 2nd attacker would have the option to merge with the 1st attacker since 2nd attacker has less flight time to the target. The flight time would be based on the first attacker. This means the 2nd attacker has the option to ACS attack as long as his fleet can catch up to the 1st attacker.
