i'll have to say that i dont agree with Coolhands reasoning, if you are going to be a pirate and raid others for the profit then you dont get to choose how they will retaliate, just because you only punched him doesnt mean he cant kick you back, or shoot you in the head.. lol

Not really my point. He (whoever "he" may be for purposes of the discussion) has the right to retaliate as he sees fit, true, but lobbing a boatload of missiles at a planet you either aren't planning to attack or don't need to missile to attack successfully is unwise because it will antagonize players beyond what simply attacking them would.
if you are an aggressive player then be sure not to leave any weak spots in your defences before making enemys or else you have nothing to complain about when they take advantage of them..

But when they
don't take advantage, they just appear to be being, for lack of a better way to put it, whiny. It sends this message of "I can't really do anything about what you're doing, but I'm going to lob missiles at you to irk you." It's like the kid in grade school that used to keep on insulting other kids, no matter how often he'd get slammed into the lockers.
the only other points i want to make are that..
1/ moving your fleets is not defending.. lol its called "moving your fleets" or "running".. lol

2/ making it known to the guys your fighting that profit is your aim when attacking them is always a bad call, they only need to focus on costing you as much as possible to win and thats what smaller guys go for most of the time, they dont try to win all out but try to catch stray fleets and bases that are not defended well, like with 1 CR and a few cargo ships..

1 - of course it's a defensive strategy. He spent MUCH more in deuterium flying 30 destroyers 70+ systems, than he took in. I had no defenses (they having been earlier IPM'd to non-existence - his alliance-mates funded the rebuilding and then some), so he can't even claim to have "hurt me" in that regard. All he did is waste several thousand deuterium and a fleet slot for me to casually move out of the way.
He launched that mess at <25,000 resources, a couple large cargo ships, and 1 cruiser. It wasn't very profitable if it HAD hit. It's a foolish, wasteful attack.
2 - what possible other aim
should you have in attacking somebody? Of course profit's the motivation. If I start attacking because I get off on inflicting misery or something, it's time to turn off the computer and go outside, y'dig? You're not going to "win all out" in this game; if you kill my entire fleet, I still have my mines and such and can still rebuild. There's no "winning" or "losing" in an absolute sense.
Yes, making profitable attacks and being unprofitable TO attack *is* absolutely all I care about. Not only because it's fun to do well, but because THAT is how you succeed in-game.
