Expeditions - any purpose?

search.php?keywords=expedition+tech&ter ... mit=Search
That search and the threads it found doesn't help shed much light.
What is Expedition tech and what does it offer? How does it work? Is it worth the investment (I'd rather be getting impulse tech which is too expensicve to go frittering away deuterium on anything else).
?:-)

Higher level allows more trips at one time. It's a gamble. You could win ships, resources - but also could lose ships sent. You would want at least a handful sent to yield any return.

what is the rule/ formula/ technique for expeditions is?
What ratio of cargo capacity : combat power : numbers of vessels is required.
How do you send
How long will it take
What chances and how improved
y'now all the littel details that can be so helpful. Or is it just trial and error?

Sorry that I did not respond sooner, richtoven.
I've been fleetsaving while watching Dr. Who reruns (1963 -1966), and pretty much otherwise ignoring the game
But I'm back
I have five expedition slots with an expedition tech of 12
So, the formula seems to be: [Expedition Technology Level]/3+1
Beyond that, anyone's guess is as good as mine as to what one must send to have what odds of getting what
