Attacking fleets will always show up on your overview in bright red colour stating who is attacking and where from, in addition to the time the enemy fleet will arrive at your world.

You can defend your planets to some degree by building defenses, however, people will attack heavily defended worlds if they have enough ships and/or resources to gain profit from. Continuing on from that, never assume if you build ships they will help protect your planet, in essence that is true, but in reality the entire reason some people will attack you is because you have ships there. When people destroy your ships they are transferred into a debris field of raw materials that can be harvested with recyclers. Best way to stop this if you want to build a fleet is to always have your ships flying when you are offline, along with any spare resources you had stored in their cargo holds. This is called fleetsaving, it would be a good idea to look this up and familiarise yourself with the various forms of it and how to execute it perfectly, fleetsaving is an essential skill to master if you want to progress to a good level in this game.

Hope I helped and above all, have fun!
