Hello, I am a bit stumped when it comes to expeditions. Do expeditions give you information on unexplored planets? If not, what do they do? And what do you need to do to execute an expedition. I'm brand new to this game but I already enjoy it a lot. Any help would be appreciated.

Expiditions are when you use a ship to explore uncharted parts of the universe. (Which is the 16 spot in any section of any galaxy.)
You can use any ship to explore, all you need is expidition technology. You could run into several things on an expidition. You could find some ships (same type as the ones you sent), resources, a black hole (which would destroy your ships) or nothing. A list could be found here:

But basically, It's just a game of chance, since you don't get the good stuff very often.

Most people I talk to don't use this very much. Its nice for a little gamble every once in a while, but it's too risky to be relied upon IMO

Thank you so much! So I take it that for colonizing, you just send a colony ship to one of the planet slots and whatever you get is what you get?

Correct. However, it is recommended to have at least 250 fields. And if it is small (or the temp is not to your liking), you can abandon it by clicking on the name of the colony in the overview and clicking abandon planet.

Most players prefer colder temperatures because more deut is produced on colder planets. The coldest planet I've ever seen is From -100°C to -60°C, if that helps.
