How do you protect yourself against 30,000 light fighters from someone who resides in the top twenty when you just broke the 10,000 point protection mark ? Happened to a friend, I would very much like for that not to happen. Is it possible? Tips, suggestions, or ideas?

Best advice I can give , other than Fleet saving anyway, is to spend all you resources before you get off.
