I suggest that you look at the description under each of the buildings, etc. If you click on the picture it will bring up a more complete description. Building up your shipyard allows for faster and a better variety of ship building, provided you have all the other needed elements in place. When you get ability to build nanites you will find they help in all things building.

There is also "+25% increase speed of ship production (All planets)" on Zorg Empire Plus!
