Can you take over an enemy's planet?

When I attack another empire in my galaxy I just take their resources and I can't seem to just out right take their planet, no matter what I throw at them. I even sent a colony ship over directly after taking all of their resources. Please help!

You can not colonize or destroy another persons planet. You may only colonize an empty galaxy slot. You can destroy the persons fleet and/or defenses and you may take their resources that is all.
